Water in swimming pools, water wells and hot tubs are prone to formation of algae and bacteria that may harm people that use them. That is why chlorination has been a popular way to disinfect swimming pools and ensure its sanitation. In this process, the water is being treated by adding chlorine to it. However, since chlorine is a chemical substance, while it may be effective in water disinfection , it may cause harm to human bodies upon contact. If you have tried getting itchy red eyes or itchy skin after swimming in a pool, that may be the effect of chlorination on your body.

The good news though is that avoiding these drawbacks doesn’t mean that we need to compromise on the sanitation of the swimming pool or even keep ourselves from using it. An healthy alternative has been developed to effectively prevent bacteria formation in the water without harming human bodies. This is called salt water chlorination.

Upon hearing these words, one may be hesitant as it sounds like your swimming pool has saltwater in it. In contrast to the traditional chlorination process, salt water chlorination uses dissolved salt to be broken down through electrolysis. This chemical reaction yields hypochlorous acid and sodium hypochlorite which are commonly used sanitizing agents for swimming pool. Take note though that this doesn’t mean that your swimming pool will be totally chlorine-free. Other than the process, the main difference is that instead of adding chlorine directly into the water, a chlorine generator is utilized instead which is less harmful. Because of this, chloramines, which are the irritants in traditionally pools are burned off during the process of electrolysis. Your pool is still being chlorinated without the harmful effects of chlorine. How great is that!

“By choosing a saltwater sanitizing system, you can reap the benefits of traditional chlorinated water without many of the negative side effects.” – Landscape Solutions

Below are the advantages reported by people who have tried using salt systems for pool chlorination:

1.       Swimwear quality is preserved. With a salt chlorinated pool, your bathing suits and swimming trunks will fade or disintegrate over time.

2.       Improved smell. The caustic and sometimes intoxicating smell of directly applied chlorine would not be a problem in pools that uses salt systems.

3.       It helps you save time and money. Though salt water systems might be expensive at first upon installation and set up, over time, it is easier to maintain and costs less than purchasing, storing, adding and handling chlorine.

Because of these advantages that salt systems bring, you can greatly improve everyone’s swimming experience in your pool which can be more enjoying and longer lasting. Also, thAll you need would be a chlorine generator, some of which automatically manufactures chlorine from salt ions in your own pool! How convenient is that! Of course, to maintain the safety of your chlorination process, you can always get water chemistry testers, PH tek feeders to help test and reduce acid content in your pool.
